Mimi A La Mode Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Can the shower cap get wet? It looks too pretty to actually use!
A.Yes, all parts are water resistant. We line all the fabric and tulle styles in a soft frosty vinyl. The clear shower cap is pretty and dries quickly, too. The bow is made of polyester and the flowers are "weather proof". They are made to be left outside in the rain. If you hang the shower cap on a hook to dry after you use it, it should be dry in about 1-2 hours. I always say "Do you know how wet your towel gets after you dry off? Once you hang it on the towel bar it will be dry fairly quickly, right?"
Q. After using my shower cap for a certain amount of time I would like to know if I can wash it?
A.Yes, I suggest removing the flower if it has one and placing your shower cap in a small lingerie wash bag. Wash it with like colors in the gentle cycle. Once it is finished simply reshape it to smooth out the vinyl and hang to dry. Just remember to put the bow back on so you will look as cute as possible in the bath.
Q. Do your sleep masks have aromatherapy or fragrance added?
A. No, we only use a hypoallergenic polyfluff to stuff the sleep mask. We are aware that some essential oils for aroma therapy when used without the assistance of a natural healing practitioner could be a cause for concern.
Q. How do you wash the sleep mask?
A. I suggest doing what my mother did. She would have a small pan and a delicate wash soap in her bathroom. She would fill her pan with some tepid water add a little soap. She would soak her hand wash for a few minutes, rinse and hang it up with a clip to dry in the shower. Reshape if necessary. Then she would take a cap nap!
Q.After a few years, my shower cap elastic has stretched out! Can it be fixed?
A. Yes, if you wash your shower cap as described above. You may have a seamstress take out the old elastic and replace it with new elastic. Many dry cleaners have an alterations department that can do small sewing projects. Or, you may do it yourself and perhaps be inspired to start a business like I did.
Most elastic is made with rubber which is a natural substance. Eventually all elastic as it ages and is exposed to heat and soaps will eventually disintegrate. Think of those old swimsuits in the storage that you pull out after years in a box and the elastic turns to dust when you stretch it.
Q. Do you buy these shower caps and decorate them?
A. No, we are a design house. That means we manufacture our products here in a workroom in Los Angeles, California.
We take great care and thoughtful contemplation in the selection of the fabric, color, trims and styling of everything that we create and design. We use the best materials that we can buy to create a quality product with great design elements. What is most important to me is to create a useful and beautiful product. We make everything from scratch. Other companies large and small try to copy us but then they realize how much work is put into what we create and they quit or do it the cheap and easy way.
I like to think it is similar to the couture houses in France. Our name is Mimi A La Mode after all!
Q. Can you do custom orders?
A. Most of the time the answer is no. The price to create something one at a time can be quite costly and most customers are not willing to pay the higher cost. You may email us with a special request and it may be possible.
Q. Where are your products made?
A. Here in sunny California. We were originally based in San Francisco, but I moved the entire business to the fashion district of Los Angeles in 2004.
We have been supportive of a family living in Costa Rica over the years so some of the "yesterdays treasures" and specials may have this origin of sewing. All materials were purchased in the US in this instance.
Q. Why did you start making shower caps?
A. I have always used a shower cap because I have long hair and do not like washing it everyday because it takes me so long to go through the whole process. I decided that I needed a nicer shower cap to go into my newly remodeled bathroom in my apartment.
I originally sewed a black and white polka dot style and added a bow and flower to coordinate with the colors. After that, I took a speech class where we needed to show a prop while we made our talk. I sewed a few more in other colors to show during the speech. I didnt do so well on that speech, but afterward all the girls in the class came up and wanted to buy one. That experience inspired me to sell to some stores.
Q. Where can I buy your products?
A. At the moment we are selling online and to a few stores in Southern California. We are opening a new division for a direct sales home party opportunity. Call us directly for more information.
